Il lungo racconto "Il diavolo", composto nel 1889, venne pubblicato postumo un anno dopo la morte di Tolstoj, avvenuta nel 1910, seguendo dunque la stessa sorte di "Padre Sergio", un altro dei suoi racconti che per non pochi aspetti a questo si avvicina. "Il diavolo" infatti è, anche qui, la tentazione dei sensi: tema fondamentale nell'arte di Tolstoj, che si trova sviluppato in numerose sue opere e in particolare anche in un altro famosissimo racconto lungo, "La sonata a Kreutzer", pubblicato proprio nel 1889.
