El Padre Brown -el famoso cura-detective creado por Chesterton e inspirado por el Padre O'Connor, sacerdote al que el autor conoció en 1909 y con el que mantuvo la amistad más cercana y fecunda de toda su vida- es un sacerdote católico que se adentra en los terrenos del crimen con la misma serenidad y santa simplicidad que en el confesionario; es un hombre menudo, escasamente convencional y casi insignificante, pero tiene unos condenados ojos que todo lo ven y penetran; encarna la racionalidad; muestra su amor casi instintivo por los misterios de Dios y una profunda sabiduría del corazón -que conoce tanto las cimas del bien como los abismos del mal-, sin dejar de mostrarse nunca profundamente humano y misericordioso con los criminales convictos y confesos; en él la fe se hace amistad y/o misericordia. Al hilo de las más complicadas tramas policíacas, Chesterton desgrana sus ideas sobre el alma humana, la política y la sociedad de la época, la pobreza y la riqueza, la religión y el ateísmo, la fe y la razón, las confesiones cristianas, y en particular el catolicismo, sin ocultar en ningún momento las razones que le llevaron a adherirse vivamente a este último.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He began his education at St Paul's School, and later went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are The Man Who Was Thursday, a metaphysical thriller, and The Everlasting Man, a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics. Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown." Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.
