After having read the other two books,'And the Mountains echoed' and 'The Kite Runner',I knew I had to read this irresistible creation. A thought provoking and mind blowing read, only hardest of hearts can fail to move.A saga of two women fighting against all odds, after having faced them, this shows us that behind every burqa there is a human being. His lyrical way of writing makes you feel as though you aren't reading this story but it is itself narrating it.No doubt he is a master storyteller who keeps you captivated and in the end and later you feel like you had been a small part of the character's lives, feeling their pain and blemishes, carrying them around with you until it finishes. Being unimaginably heart rending,at the end a few shed tears for the heroines or smile unknowingly at their endurance and strength. Sometimes I feel the three novels written by him are all part of one, reminding the world of what Afghanistan has gone through and that you won't find a single person their

I have a mixed feelings about this book. I like how the writer injected the 3 decades history of Afganistan and showed what the people has been experienced, especially the women. It exposed how bad it is - how the officials use religion to manipulate the people, to justify their cruelty and injustice towards women. And the fact that it is happening again recently is just unspeakable. The world is not as beautiful as I imagine. But the flow of the story has been a blocker for me to build emotional connection with the characters. While I am building a connection with Maryam, it needs to be stopped as the author brings me the Layla story. Then going back to Maryam's, then move again to Layla's, it goes like that till the end. That is why I give it 4 stars.

Staggeringly beautiful and deep and rich and sad and frightening and infuriating." At once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love." This is an easy read, it’s not heavy, but the subject matter and the themes are pretty tough…It’s such a powerful book." The book received favorable critical acclaim from Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, Booklist and became a number one New York Times Best Seller.
