Once again, Ms Shay gives us a story that is “real”. Where the characters are imperfect, are struggling as individuals and as parents, and walk a road that has not been smooth In this book, we have Declan Marino and Delilah (Lila) Carrier. They were HS sweethearts, and later married but life was not easy. These two serve their country and at one point , Declan’s deployments became too much for Lila. She felt stifled , and oppressed. They end up hurting each other to the point of living together is no longer an option. Now he is taking care of his three girls, and is moving to a new rental , where they will be closer to their Mom’s life. Declan and Lila are filled with regrets, resentments, lack of communication, fears, misconceptions, and doubts. But still , the love is hidden under all their issues. Will they be able to have a second chance in love or will this be the end of that hopeful light? Aside from the complex plot and characters, the author highlights the stress and tough situations that not only those in the military go through, but also their families. In addition to this, she reminds us that no one’s life is perfect but with love , support , commitment and communication, the wrinkles can be overcome. Include the children in that communication. Frequently they feel forgotten. Another heartbreaking, heartwarming and thought provoking story by this very talented author. I was gifted this copy. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

I loved this series by Kathryn Shay! Come Back To Me is the final book in her To Serve and Protect series and it was my favorite. Declan and Lila have always loved one another, but for some reason could never get on the same page concerning their life and how they want live it. Declan could be extremely selfish about his job and where they lived and expected Lila to just go along with it. Finding themselves at a crossroad once again Lila chose to walk away, but in doing so she left her children also which many found unforgivable. Finding them all once again living in the same town Lila realizes just how much she wants to spend time with her children and Declan as well. When their daughter's needs supersede their own they realize just how much they still love each other and want to be a family once again. I was given an ARC from the author/publisher.
