Er beschreibt den Leidensweg des jüdisch-orthodoxen Toralehrers Mendel Singer im (fiktiven) Schtetl Zuchnow in Russland und in dem folgenden amerikanischen Exil in der Zeit von 1900 bis nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Mendel erleidet in der Geschichte schwere Schicksalsschläge, durch die seine Frömmigkeit erschüttert und sein Glaube an Gott auf eine harte Probe gestellt werden.
