About this ebook

A globe-trotting physician's remarkable journey deep into the inner workings of the human body, blending cutting-edge medical science, unforgettable adventures, and profound cultural insights.

In this fascinating odyssey through our insides, Dr. Jonathan Reisman—physician, adventurer, and naturalist—navigates the human body like an explorer discovering a new world. With a unique perspective shaped by his travels, Reisman unveils surprising connections between our anatomy and the natural environment.

From revealing how understanding mountain watersheds helps diagnose heart attacks to discovering that the body is primarily composed of mucus, not water, Reisman's globetrotting offers a fresh lens on our inner workings. His offbeat adventures lead to captivating medical insights: a trek in the Alaskan Arctic proves fat is more hero than villain; a Himalayan journey uncovers the boundary between brain and mind; and a sheep's head meal in Iceland yields a lesson in empathy.

Through vivid storytelling and a gift for demystifying science, The Unseen Body illustrates how our organs are inextricably intertwined—an internal ecosystem reflecting the natural world. Reisman's wholly original perspective offers a moving glimpse into the human body's inner workings, reframing how we understand our own health and the remarkable wonders within us.

a relatively easy read for someone with limited medical knowledge. my favorite parts were realizing the similarities between people and those I share my life with, my dog and cats, after all, we all have blood, mucus, urine and tissue. a treat for anyone interested in anatomy! thanks!

Nurses unite and get a copy for yourself to enjoy and to give to all those friends and relatives who beg you to "translate medicalese"! This book is fun, entertaining, totally understandable for all English speakers, a travelogue, and gives a great understanding of the workings of our bodies. As a retired RN, I have been translating medicalese into English for patients, family, friends, and acquaintances since forever. Which means that I truly value this trip through ERs, The Frozen North, Nepal, slaughterhouses, ethnic foods, and more. I loved that it came in audio format that I could listen to as I multitasked and was performed in an enthusiastic manner by professional actor/narrator, Robert Petkoff. I requested and received a free temporary copy from Macmillan Audio via NetGalley. Thank you!
