About this ebook

The Sunday Times No.1 Bestseller.

From the number one bestselling author of The Clifton Chronicles, Jeffrey Archer, Nothing Ventured is the thrilling first novel in the William Warwick series.

This is not a detective story. This is a story about a detective.

William Warwick is eight when he decides to join the police force. Resolute in the face of his prominent QC father’s objections, William graduates from university with a degree in art history and immediately enrols as a constable in the Metropolitan Police force.

Gaining insight from his first mentor, an experienced, world-weary constable, his keen mind quickly takes him into a role in Scotland Yard’s Art and Antiques unit and his first case: the recovery of a Rembrandt stolen from the Fitzmolean Museum.

It will take skill and tenacity for William to solve the crime. Along the way he will encounter many who will change his life: from Miles Faulkner, a crooked art collector, and his influential lawyer – who bends the law to the point of breaking – to research assistant Beth Rainsford, a woman with secrets whom he falls hopelessly in love with . . .

William Warwick’s destiny is set. The only question is, how far will his ambition take him?

Thrilling, absorbing and entertaining, Nothing Ventured heralds the start of a gripping series from master storyteller Jeffrey Archer and introduces a character destined to become one of his most enduring legacies. Continue the series with Hidden in Plain Sight.

Praise for Jeffrey Archer:

‘Probably the greatest storyteller of our age’ – The Mail on Sunday

Jeffrey Archer let you into his story as if you are entering a lifelong friendship. When you turn the last page and read the last paragraph, it's like losing dear friends. Then you yearn to meet those friends again, and you pick up the next Jeffrey Archer novel and start the friendships anew. Thank you for the unforgettable characters you let us meet in your books, Mister Archer!

This is not a detective story, this is a story about a detective William Warwick has always wanted to be a detective, and decides, much to his father’s dismay, that rather than become a barrister like his father, Sir Julian Warwick QC, and his sister Grace, he will join London’s Metropolitan Police Force. After graduating from university, William begins a career that will define his life: from his early months on the beat under the watchful eye of his first mentor, Constable Fred Yates, to his first high-stakes case as a fledgling detective in Scotland Yard’s Art and Antiques squad. Investigating the theft of a priceless Rembrandt painting from the Fitzmolean Museum, he meets Beth Rainsford, a research assistant at the gallery who he falls hopelessly in love with, even as Beth guards a secret of her own that she’s terrified will come to light. I always look forward to a new series by the author & we actually first met William as a fictional character in The Clifton Chronicles. As ever this is a page turning, entertaining read. The characters are very well portrayed & have plenty of depth. The pace flows effortlessly & I can’t wait to read the rest of the series. I was drawn in from page one & read it in under a day. My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
