Lafcadio Hearn (1850–1904), also known by his Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo, was a writer of international fame whose work helped bridge the cultural divide between Japan and the Western world at the turn of the 20th century. Born on the Greek island of Lefkada, Hearn spent his early years in Ireland and emigrated to the United States, where he began his literary career as a journalist. His fascination with the exotic and the supernatural led him to settle in Japan after a period in the West Indies. In Japan, he married a Japanese woman, took on a Japanese name, and became a naturalized Japanese citizen. His profound appreciation for Japanese culture and keen ethnographic eye found expression in his writings, which include 'Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan' (1894), 'Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things' (1904), and notably 'Japan: An Attempt at Interpretation' (1904). In this latter book, Hearn delves into the religious life of Japan, discussing Shintoism and Buddhism as well as the cohesive social structures and family life.
