His profound appreciation for Japanese culture and keen ethnographic eye found expression in his writings, which include 'Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan' (1894), 'Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things' (1904), and notably 'Japan: An Attempt at Interpretation' (1904).
