In His Steps, a pioneering work of Christian fiction published in 1896, intricately weaves a narrative that challenges individuals to live their lives guided by the principles of their faith. Sheldon employs a didactic literary style that immerses the reader in the lives of a group of protagonists who grapple with the question, "What would Jesus do?" This central inquiry becomes a transformative force as the characters confront moral dilemmas, social injustices, and personal sacrifices within their community. Set against the backdrop of late 19th-century America, the novel reflects the socio-religious concerns of the era, urging readers to consider the ethical implications of their daily choices in a rapidly changing world. Charles M. Sheldon, a pastor and socially conscious individual, wrote this novel out of a deep concern for the moral fabric of society. His commitment to addressing the pressing issues of poverty, injustice, and community responsibility is evident throughout the text. Sheldon's own experiences with faith and activism informed his narrative, promoting a vision of Christianity that champions actionable faith and personal accountability. In His Steps is a compelling call to action for both contemporary readers and those of the past, urging them to examine their lives through a lens of faith-driven purpose. This engaging tale not only offers spiritual reflection but also inspires practical application, making it a must-read for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of what it truly means to live a life modeled after Christ.
