La storia d'amore di Sigfrido e Crimilde e le cruente imprese di Attila e Teodorico costituiscono i due cicli del maggior poema epico germanico scritto nel 1200 da autore ignoto. Combattendo contro i Nibelunghi (stirpe di nani che vivono nelle viscere della terra), il giovane eroe Sigfrido conquista un immenso tesoro e alcuni poteri magici: la spada che uccide ciò che tocca, il cappuccio che rende invisibili, l'anello che moltiplica le forze. Ma non sempre la magia è sufficiente a difendersi dalla morte... Crimilde vendicherà Sigfrido in un crescendo di lotte che causeranno il massacro di due interi popoli. Ne emerge un mondo arcaico dominato da una visione pessimistica della vita in cui la gioia volge inevitabilmente in una tragica fine. Un classico della letteratura di tutti i tempi, che ha avuto in Richard Wagner e nella sua ben nota tetralogia del Reno il massimo esegeta.
