Donnerkopf (der im Roman nicht weiter hervortritt) hat seinen Wohnsitz auf einen Turm verlegt und gibt von dort buntscheckige Bulletins aus, die über den Fortgang der Angelegenheit unterrichten sollen. Ein lauer Abend bricht an. Auftreten eines Scharlatans, der auf dem Marktplatz eine Himmelfahrt in Aussicht stellt. Er hat sich dazu eine eigene Theorie ausgedacht, die er weitläufig vorträgt. Scheitert jedoch an der Skepsis des Publikums. Was das für Folgen hat.
