Hervey Garrett Smith (1896-1979) was an American artist, illustrator, and author known for his expertise in maritime arts. A graduate of the Pratt Institute, he provided illustrations for publications like National Geographic and various boating magazines. He was a self-employed marine artist and writer, and one of the founders and the first director of the Long Island Maritime Museum. His legacy lies in his detailed books on traditional sailing skills, such as The Marlinspike Sailor and The Arts of the Sailor, which have become essential guides for both seasoned and novice sailors.
