Mrs. Newsome, a bitter woman more interested in her family business than the companion of men, sends her fiancée Lambert Strether to find her son Chad in Paris where he presumably lives an immoral life. Strether eventually finds Chad but he doesn’t see immorality in his behavior, only freedom and honesty. He too will soon become attracted of the European way of life.
