Henry James 1843 – 1916 narratore americano geniale e innovativo, è una delle figure chiave nella storia del romanzo moderno. Si forma e vive per lungo tempo nel Vecchio Continente, dove conosce Maupassant, Zola, Flaubert, Turgenev. Dall’Europa continuerà a essere incuriosito, se non ossessionato, fino a decidere di prendere, nel 1915, la cittadinanza inglese. L’Europa è miraggio e destino fatale, ma il legame con gli Stati Uniti resta indissolubile, per quanto contrastato, come racconta in L’americano e I bostoniani. Prima di morire decide di eliminare ogni traccia della sua vita privata.
