Love Harlan's books but this one seems different somehow. Interesting story but the big twist just confused me. Must be getting old. Read it in 3 sessions so was certainly hooked, but I expected and wanted MORE. Highly recommend Harlan's books but not this one for a first time reader. Try his previous novel for a good example.

It was slow to start, and in a few spots laboured, but it got much better and was otherwise excellent. Relevantly, I read this just after establishment politics had robbed America of Bernie Sanders being President - a lost chance at meaningful change. So I was happy the author explored the damage of America's continual wars & the power & privilege of their rich, but also saddened at the realisation Americans seem to know they are enslaved and need change.

I love books where I can keep turning the pages desperate to know what's going to happen next & where I can relate to the characters, the setting/s, atmosphere, etc. This book didn't do it for me & I got bored at times, finding it tedious & complicated. I couldn't relate to any of the characters. I've given it 4 stars as it's undoubtedly a good story with a few big twists. It's just not MY kind of book but am sure others will find it spectacular! Don't let me put you off! A very well thought out storyline!!
