I love Iceland and that was the reason I bought the book. But in actual fact I became very engrossed in Agnes story that I forgot the setting! It is remarkably well told and I like the way the story develops. I thought it might be depressing but it is not even at the end. I like the way that the author doesn't dwell on the ghoulish side of things,

Captivating, emotional. I read it while visiting þingeyrar farm and vatnsdalur. Ghost stories about the events still exist among the locals. Also interesting to learn how 19th life was there.

Totally loved this book. Her sparse and beautiful prose brought to life the isolated and hard living of the communities living in Iceland at that time. The slow unfurling of the story and the growth of the main character was done with a tenderness which sparked an interest and caring that remained with me for weeks after I had read the last page.
