Ceea ce uneşte aceste trei eseuri este prestigiul pe care îl au temele lor în viaţa noastră. Toate trei pleacă de la prezumţia că, citindu-le, am putea dobândi un profit în privinţa felului în care vom înţelege să trăim. Vom deveni poate mai „înţelegători“, mai „inteligenţi“ şi, astfel, într-o epocă a demagogiei dotate cu multiple resurse, mai greu manipulabili.
Cu toţii ştim în chip intuitiv ce sunt minciuna, ura sau seducţia. Dar, întorcând paginile acestei cărţi, s-ar putea ca, la sfârşit, să ne trezim în cu totul alt punct decât eram înainte de a o fi deschis. Speranţa autorului este că, la capătul acestui exerciţiu de lectură, cititorul îi va împartăşi iluzia: aceea de a fi înţeles.
