About this ebook

Chess is 99% tactics. If this celebrated observation is true for the master, how much more so for beginners and casual players! If you want to win more games, nothing works better than training combinations.

There are two types of books on tactics, those that introduce the concepts followed by some examples, and workbooks that contain numerous exercises.

Chess masters and trainers Franco Masetti and Roberto Messa have done both: they explain the basic tactical ideas AND provide an enormous amount of exercises for each different theme. Masetti and Messa have created a great first tactics book. It teaches you how to:

¯ identify weak spots in the position of your opponent

¯ recognize patterns of combinations

¯ visualize tricks.

1001 Chess Exercises for Beginners can also be used as a course text book, because only the most didactically productive exercises have been used.

If you plan to read this on an eReader, proceed with caution. The images (the meat of the book) are very small and mostly unreadable on my device. Google will not refund you despite what their refund policy says on the website. Their "automated system" is an impenetrable black box that apparently no one understands or can explain. Terrible customer service. The content of the book is fine - the formatting of the images in the eBook could give you issues though. BEWARE.

This is not a beginners book. Only the first three chapter are for beginners. Rest problems are pretty advanced. Many problems there are no forcing line, and 2-3 variations and sub-variation possible, one need to calculate all the lines to assess the final winning position. Chess tactics for champions by Susan Polger is more aimed for beginners. If you are intermediate player may be this book or 1001 Chess exercises for Club player from the same publisher may be more suitable.
