Pe cand stateam acolo, gandindu-ma la lumea veche, necunoscuta, mi-am amintit de uimirea lui Gatsby cand a observat prima oara luminita verde de la capatul pontonului lui Daisy. Strabatuse un drum foarte lung pana sa ajunga pe pajistea lui albastra, iar visul lui i se paruse pesemne asa de aproape incat nici nu s-a gandit ca s-ar putea sa nu ajunga la el. Nu intelesese ca visul ramasese deja undeva in trecut, undeva departe in intunericul nemarginit din spatele orasului, unde campurile intunecate ale tarii se intindeau sub cerul noptii.
Gatsby crezuse in luminita verde, in viitorul tumultos care se indeparteaza de noi cu fiecare an ce trece. N-am reusit sa-l prindem atunci, dar nu mai conteaza… maine vom alerga mai repede, ne vom intinde bratele si mai mult… Iar intr-o dimineata frumoasa…
Si incercam sa mergem mai departe, ca niste barci impotriva curentului, impinse, fara incetare, inapoi in trecut.
