Nel cortile di una scuola media della periferia barese uno studente viene massacrato di botte da un compagno e ricoverato in prognosi riservata. A distanza di pochi metri, inerme, un altro ragazzo osserva la scena. Passano quasi vent’anni. Nel frattempo, dopo quel momento tragico, Plinio (la vittima) e Libero (il testimone defilato del pestaggio) sono diventati amici. Un’amicizia basata sulla protezione reciproca. Ma quando Libero, professore in un carcere, incontra Letizia, una psicologa originaria della Valle d’Itria, il rapporto con Plinio si trasforma. Sullo sfondo di una città, Bari, ormai ridotta cinicamente alla sua anima scheletrica e post-industriale, tormentata da scandali locali e da losche manovre politiche, non c’è dramma che le tre giovani figure urbane non possano esorcizzare. Non importa quanto dolore vi sia in gioco.
