¿Cuál es el secreto del padre Brown, ese curita, «esencia misma de aquellos insulsos habitantes de la zona oriental», según apreciaba en La inocencia del padre Brown el todopoderoso detective francés Valentin? La explicación de Chesterton es sencilla, pero apasionante: a través de su identificación con el criminal, a través de la comprensión de su humanidad -porque también el tiene experiencia de lo que es ser hombre-, el padre Brown llega a la misericordia y a la amistad que, como él mismo dice, «resuelve todo el problema el tiempo del pecado. Se provoca el arrepentimiento antes que el crimen». Sólo la mirada misericordiosa de un amigo cambia a la persona. Una vez más, Chesterton utiliza uno de sus más queridos géneros literarios, la novela policíaca, para desvelarnos sus ideas sobre el alma humana, la sociedad, la política, la fe y la razón y el catolicismo, sin ocultar nunca las razones que le llevaron a la conversión.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He began his education at St Paul's School, and later went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are The Man Who Was Thursday, a metaphysical thriller, and The Everlasting Man, a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics. Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown." Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.
