About this ebook

Just a mile down the old dirt road beyond the Clanton Plantation was a Civil War battlefield that claimed the lives of thousands of Union and Confederate soldiers. For months, you could hear the cannon fire that echoed across the valley. Even the soldiers' moans and groans from the heavy gunfire could reverberate throughout the valley. The Confederate soldiers held their own for a while, but the Union soldiers were better trained and equipped to outlast the Confederates, which led to their surrender to the Union army after three months and five days.

But the true horror of that battlefield was never recorded in any history book. In the final days of the siege, as food and water dwindled to nothing, the Confederate soldiers trapped in their positions had resorted to unspeakable acts to survive. The screams that echoed through the valley weren't just from cannon fire—they were from men who had lost their humanity entirely. When the Union forces finally overran the Confederate lines, they found scenes so disturbing that officers ordered the evidence burned and buried, swearing their men to eternal silence.

So many young soldiers barely eighteen years of age were taken from this world just before they would have the chance to reach their manhood and experience love, and raise their children to teach their children about life. They died with rage in their hearts, not peace. They died feeling betrayed, abandoned, and consumed by a hatred so profound it seemed to seep into the very soil beneath them.

The local townspeople knew better than to go near that battlefield after dark. For decades, travelers reported seeing pale figures moving between the trees, hearing drums beating when no drummers were present, and smelling gunpowder and burning flesh on windless nights. Children who wandered too close to the old battlefield would return home changed—quiet, withdrawn, with shadows in their eyes that never quite left. Some never returned at all.

Old Marcus Webb, the last surviving resident who remembered the war firsthand, had warned before he died in 1932: "That ground is cursed.

The book is just an extreamly short, short story. Written well but not worth reading for 2-3 pages. What a shame!
