Información sobre este eBook

Der Struwwelpeter ("shock-headed Peter" or "Shaggy Peter") is a 1845 German children's book by Heinrich Hoffmann. It comprises ten illustrated and rhymed stories, mostly about children. Each has a clear moral that demonstrates the disastrous consequences of misbehavior in an exaggerated way. The title of the first story provides the title of the whole book. Der Struwwelpeter is one of the earliest books for children that combines visual and verbal narratives in a book format, and is considered a precursor to comic books. Der Struwwelpeter is known for introducing the character of the Tailor (or Scissorman) to Western literature. Some researchers now see the stories in the book as illustrations of many child mental disorders that we know about today.

Acerca del autor

Heinrich Hoffmann (1809-1894) was a German psychiatrist and author whose life and work left a significant mark on both literature and medicine. Born in Frankfurt am Main, Hoffmann pursued medical studies in Heidelberg and Halle, eventually establishing himself as a physician in his hometown. His career in psychiatry was pioneering; he served as the director of the Frankfurt Psychiatric Hospital, where he advocated for more humane treatment of the mentally ill, a revolutionary stance in an era when such patients were often subjected to harsh conditions.Hoffmann's literary contributions extend beyond his medical writings. He had a knack for capturing the imagination with his vivid storytelling, often infused with moral lessons and dark humor. His works were groundbreaking in their use of illustrations to complement the text, a technique that would influence the development of children's literature and graphic storytelling.Controversy surrounded Hoffmann's work due to its often macabre and cautionary nature, which some critics argued was too intense for young audiences. Despite this, his stories have endured, continuing to be read and analyzed for their psychological depth and social commentary.Hoffmann's influence can be seen in the works of contemporary writers who explore the darker aspects of human nature and societal norms. His commitment to humane psychiatric care and his innovative approach to literature make him a figure of enduring interest, bridging the worlds of medicine and storytelling in a way that continues to resonate with modern readers.
