The first edition had 3 reprints with almost 3,000 copies sold both in Malaysia and overseas.
The Mandarin version has sold close to 1,000 copies in China.
We have kept the preface to the first edition as it still captures the essence of the content.
This updated handbook has revised content on most of the chapters incorporating new
guidelines and evidence to ensure you have the most recent information at hand. These
guidelines are sourced from the leading health organisations and the global obstetrics and
gynaecology societies. The chapters have been critically reviewed by leaders in the field to
whom we extend our gratitude.
Some of the topics have been redesigned to appear in the appendix to align with the curriculum
that is being conducted at the onsite Intensive Course in Obstetric Emergencies (ICOE). This
handbook serves as an indispensable resource for all the participants at the course and is
complemented by videos and podcast via the QR code embedded in the chapters.
The handbook has a design make over with softer tones to provide a more appealing
appearance.
It is true that, there are an abundance of digital resources available for obstetric emergencies.
We argue that there is still an enduring place for physical handbook for ease and quick
reference of important information during emergencies.
It is sad that the recent WHO data show mothers still die in childbirth and it is hoped this
handbook will be a useful resource to obstetricians and midwives as it endeavours to provide
a clear medical approach during critical moments in childbirth.
