Cicely Lewis, the Read Woke Librarian helped create Read Woke Chapter Books with Lerner Books. The Hair Magic series features a smart, empowered young girl who is always solving mysteries and problems. But she also has "hair magic". With just a few magic words she can change her hair style to fit her mood. This aspect of Imani's character shows a young girl who celebrates her heritage and embraces her curls.

About the author

Cicely Lewis is a school librarian with a passion for creating lovers of reading based in Georgia. In 2017, she started the Read Woke challenge in response to the shootings of young unarmed black people, the repeal of DACA, and the lack of diversity in young adult literature. She was named the 2020 National Librarian of the Year by School Library Journal and Scholastic, a 2019 Library Journal Mover and Shaker and the 2019 National Teacher Award for Lifelong Readers by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and Penguin Random House (PRH).

Anastasia Magloire Williams is an illustrator, storyteller, and graphic designer living in sunny Florida. It is her passion to paint colorful adventures, reveal important history, and tell untold stories that reflect the diverse world we all share. Just like in the book Wild, Wild Hair, she had a complicated relationship with her big Afro as a child. But with the help of her amazing stylist Okeya, she has learned to love her magical hair!
