Coastal ecosystems are centres of high biological productivity, but their conservation is often threatened by numerous and complex environmental factors. Citing examples from the major littoral habitats worldwide, such as sandy beaches, salt marshes and mangrove swamps, this text characterises the biodiversity of coastline environments and highlights important aspects of their maintenance and preservation, aided by the analysis of key representative species. About the author
Brooke Maslo is Assistant Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources at Rutgers University. Working in applied conservation biology, her research focuses on evidence-based strategies for the conservation of threatened and endangered species, particularly shorebirds.
Julie L. Lockwood is Professor and Director of the Graduate Program in Ecology and Evolution at Rutgers University. Her research interests emphasise how species invasions and extinctions combine to shape present-day biodiversity patterns, with focus on the dynamics of small populations.
