About this ebook

This book presents select proceedings of the ISSS International Conference on Micro, Nano, and Smart Systems (IC-MNSS) in IISc Bengaluru during July 9 to 12, 2024 and presents different applications of smart materials and systems in aerospace, robotics, quantum, agriculture, and biomedical technologies followed by microfabrication processes and packaging technologies required to design and develop different sensors on micro and nanoscale. The first few chapters cover shape memory alloys (SMA) and its modelling and remaining chapters outline the application of smart systems and materials in quantum technology, digital agriculture, and healthcare. After describing the microfabrication processes in bulk and surface micromachining processes, the design and development of various sensors are demonstrated in the last few chapters. The book is valuable to researchers and professionals working in the area of micro and nano-based design, fabrication, and development of sensors, and their application in smart systems, water purification, and energy harvesting.

About the author

Ashok Kumar Pandey is a professor and head of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad. Before joining the Institute, he completed his master’s and Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and postdoctoral research from Israel Institute of Technology, Technion, Haifa. During his PhD, he spent six months in the Mechanical Engineering Department at National University of Singapore towards development of characterization setup for MEMS torsional mirrors under different ambient conditions. The related published work was awarded with Hetenyi Award in 2010 by the Society of Experimental Mechanics, USA. He was the convener for nanoscience and nanotechnology for IITH-JICA friendship project since its inception till 2019 and also an officiating dean of Academics at Indian Institute of Technology Bhilai until 2021. He has initiated and coordinated two major interdisciplinary master’s programs in integrated sensors system and electrical vehicle technology at IIT Hyderabad.

Maryam Shojaei Baghini is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering IIT Bombay, India. Her research interests span analog/mixed-signal/RF IC design for various applications, sensor systems, and device-circuit co-design. She has published more than 330 peer-reviewed papers and is the joint-inventor of 6 granted US patents and 29 granted Indian patents. She is a fellow of INAE and distinguished lecturer of IEEE Sensors Council from 2022 to 2024. She was a TATA Trust chair professor in Frugal Engineering from 2020 to 2023. Maryam is recipient of the Qualcomm-India Faculty Award in 2021 and several other awards in the past. Maryam received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electronics engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, followed by two years of industry experience and postdoctoral research at IIT Bombay before joining as a faculty member in 2008.

Gondi Kondaiah Ananthasuresh earned his bachelor’s degree from IIT-Madras, master’s from the University of Toledo, and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, all in mechanical engineering. He is a professor in Mechanical Engineering and dean of the Division of Mechanical Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. His principal research interests are compliant mechanisms and topology optimization with applications in microelectromechanical systems, biomechanics of cells, biomedical devices, and microrobotics. In addition to research output of about 320 journal and conference publications and 18 patents, his research group has spun off five startups (BendFlex, Mimyk, Translead Medtech, InFab, and StrideAIde). He is a co-author or sole author of two textbooks, five edited books, and 18 book chapters. He and his students have been recognized with 15 best paper awards and 10 design prizes.
