Er führt in die theoretischen Grundlagen ein, und stellt Ergebnisse empirischer Untersuchungen zur Erwachsenensozialisation in Erwachsenenbildung/Weiterbildung, in Arbeit und Beruf, in der Technisierung des Alltags, in der Migration und in der Transformation Ostdeutschlands vor. Die abschließenden Überlegungen richten sich auf Folgen der Globalisierung: die nationalstaatliche Politik kann die Institutionen des Lebenslaufs nicht mehr exklusiv gestalten. Möglichkeiten supranationaler Lebenslaufpolitik zeigen sich vor allem in der Europäischen Union.
