De nombreux écrivains ont débuté leur vie professionnelle dans des domaines très divers avant d’embrasser l’écriture, ou au contraire de s’en éloigner. Ce volume cherche à explorer la relation complexe entre cette « autre vie » et l’écriture. L’objectif est de déterminer si l’« autre vie » d’un écrivain figure dans son œuvre, l’influence voire la façonne, et si tel est le cas, dans quelle mesure. Quelle est la part de la gestation et celle de la rupture ? Est examinée l’œuvre d’écrivains aussi différents que Patrick Chamoiseau, J. M. Coetzee, Jan J. Dominique, Janet Frame, Amitav Ghosh, L. K. Johnson, Wilson Harris, Dany Laferrière, Yannick Lahens, NourbeSe Philip, Emmelie Prophète, Arundhati Roy, Edward Said, mais aussi Bartolomé de las Casas et E. L. Grant Watson. Deux essais autobiographiques et un poème inédits sont inclus, spécialement écrits pour le volume par Marie-Célie Agnant, Cyril Dabydeen et Fred D’Aguiar.

Cyril Dabydeen has published more than a dozen books of prose and poetry in the United Kingdom and Canada, including the novel Dark Swirl and the story collections My Brahmin Days, Black Jesus and Other Stories, and Jogging in Havana. The City of Ottawa appointed him Poet Laureate in the mid-1980s and granted him the first Award of Excellence for Writing and Publishing. He lives in Ottawa, ON.
Yolaine Parisot est Maître de conférences en littératures francophones et comparées à l’Université Rennes 2. Auteure d’une thèse consacrée au sujet littéraire haïtien, elle poursuit des recherches fondées sur une approche phénoménologique des littératures francophones et postcoloniales, autour des notions de perception, de mémoire et d’hybridité. Elle a publié des articles sur la littérature haïtienne de même que sur l’autobiographie et la mémoire littéraire caribéennes. Elle a coordonné, avec Véronique Bonnet et Guillaume Bridet, l’ouvrage Caraïbe et océan Indien : questions d’histoire, Itinéraires. Littérature, textes, cultures, publié chez L’Harmattan en 2009.
Judith Misrahi-Barak, Associate Professor at Paul-Valéry University Montpellier, France, currently teaches English and Postcolonial Literatures. Her Doctorate was on the Writing of Childhood in Caribbean Literature. She has published articles on Caribbean and Indo-Caribbean writers and the Caribbean and Indian diaspora (Atlantic Studies, Commonwealth, The Journal of Postcolonial Writing, Moving Worlds, The Journal of the Short Story in English, The Journal of Haitian Studies, The Journal of Transnational American Studies... ), as well as book chapters in edited collections, including most recently Littérature et esclavage (S. Moussa, ed. Éditions Desjonquères, 2010); Narrating Nomadism: Tales of Recovery and Resistance (G. N. Devy, G. V. Davis & K. K. Chakravarty, eds. Routledge, 2012); Identité et diversité : créations, discours, représentations (A.-M. Motard, ed. Pulm, 2013); Tracing the New Asian Diaspora (Om Dwivedi, ed. Rodopi, 2014). Née en Haïti, Marie-Célie Agnant vit à Montréal depuis 29 ans. Enseignante puis traductrice et interprète, elle a participé à plusieurs recherches universitaires. Son recueil de nouvelles Le Silence comme le sang (éd. Remue-Ménage) a été finaliste pour le prix du Gouverneur général du Canada.
