Neben der documenta werden drei weitere Großausstellungen ins Blickfeld genommen: die Biennale di Venezia, die Skulptur Projekte Münster und die Carnegie International in Pittsburgh. Die Biennale und die Carnegie International sind mit die ältesten noch existierenden zyklisch veranstalteten Großausstellungen. Und wenn die Carnegie International auch in Europa wenig bekannt ist, so zählt sie aber doch zu den wichtigen nordamerikanischen Schauen. Die Skulptur Projekte, die inzwischen mit der documenta und der Biennale zur Grand Tour zählt, wurden 1977 zum ersten Mal veranstaltet. Im Zeitraum 1976 bis 1982 fanden diese Ausgaben der vier Institutionen statt: documenta: 1977, 1982; Carnegie International: 1977, 1979, 1982; Biennale: 1976, 1978, 1980; Skulptur Projekte Münster: 1977.
