Vrajmohan, a very young man from a village in Saurashtra, comes to Mumbai, in search of livelihood. He has no acquaintances, no money, no place to stay and can afford very little food. The only plus point are his willingness to work extremely hard, very honest nature and an inborn shrewd business sense. Starting on this. Within a few years, Vrajmohan becomes Sheth Vrajmohandas. He now has many plus points in his life - a very caring and good-natured wife, two children Veena & Avinash and owns three big business firms. But there is one thing which is always pricking his conscience. Unknown to his wife, he has given solace and shelter to a sensitive, good hearted woman, who has suffered untold misery because of her magnificent beauty. When Avinash grows up, he hurts his father feelings by cheating him and lying to him, because he wants a larger share of the father estate. The hurt father starts with drawing himself from the business. The father and son have different ideas about what real happiness lies in. Prateep and Purvi, who are the children of Avinash & Rupa, have ideas about wealth and morality which are immensely shocking to their parents also. They do not believe in having a sense of morality in order to achieve huge fortunes. What happens in the end? The Zeroes go on increasing in the figure of wealth as it grows, but what about the number of one, which precedes the zeroes? Do the zeroes mean anything if that number vanishes?
सौराष्ट्रातल्या एका खेड्यातून व्रजमोहन नावाचा एक अल्पवयीन तरुण नोकरी-धंद्यांच्या शोधात मुंबईला येऊन पोचतो. कोणाची ओळखपाळख नाही. हातात पैसा नाही, खाण्या-पिण्याची ददात, राहायला जागा नाही. जमेची बाजू एकच असते– अपार कष्ट करण्याची तयारी, प्रामाणिक स्वभाव आणि उपजत अशी असलेली धूर्त व्यापारी दृष्टी. एवढ्या भांडवलावर मिळेल ते काम करायला लागून थोड्याच वर्षात व्रजमोहनचे शेठ व्रजमोहनदास होतात. सालस, जीव लावणारी पत्नी, वीणा आणि अविनाश ही दोन अपत्यं आणि भरभराटीला आलेले दोन-तीन मोठाले उद्योग या सर्व जमेच्या बाजू असल्या तरी एक बोच त्यांच्या मनात कायम असते. अप्रतिम रूपापायी दुर्भाग्यानं नरकात लोटल्या गेलेल्या एका भावनाशील हळव्या मनाच्या स्त्रीला आधार देऊन सुख देण्याचं पाप करून भोळ्याभाबड्या पत्नीशी केलेली प्रतारणा!
अविनाश जास्त इस्टेट आपल्याला मिळावी म्हणून वडिलांशी खोटेपणानं वागून त्यांना दुखावतो, ते मनानं दुरावतात, हळूहळू धंद्यातून अंग काढून घेऊ लागतात. खरं सुख कशात आहे याबद्दलच्या बापलेकांच्या कल्पना वेगळ्या असतात! अविनाशची मुलं प्रतीप आणि पूर्वी यांच्या संपत्ती आणि नीतिमत्ता यांबद्दलच्या कल्पना आई-वडिलांनाही प्रचंड धक्का देणा-या असतात. त्यांच्या मते प्रचंड कमाई करणं हे एकमेव ध्येय गाठण्यासाठी सर्व नीतिमत्तेचं थोतांड झुगारून द्यावं! शेवटी काय होतं? जितकी संपत्ती जास्त, तितकी शून्यं वाढत जातात, पण या शून्यांच्या आधीचा जो एकाचा आकडा असतो,तोच नाहीसा झाला, तर काय अर्थ राहतो त्या शून्यांना?تقييم هذا الكتاب الإلكتروني
