Non è del tutto chiaro quale sia l'origine della musica ma è sicuro che quest'arte invisibile si è sviluppata con la scienza, in parallelo con la matematica. E.T.A. Hoffmann, che è stato un notevolissimo musicista oltre che scrittore visionario, ha detto che la musica "ci fa entrare... dove la natura parla con accenti inauditi". Come la fantascienza. Non è un caso che in questa sorprendente antologia Hoffmann sia presente con il suo misterioso "Cavaliere Gluck", e che insieme a lui troviamo Michael Bishop e Norman Spinrad, Robert Silverberg e Lloyd Biggle, Sean McMullen e Karl Hans Strobl, Danilo Arona ed Henry S. Whitehead. Autori di tutte le epoche e di varie nazionalità che esplorano le nuove incognite della science fiction: quelle a misura d'uomo e quelle dei grandi spazi, dove il solo ritmo che conti - come nel racconto di Spinrad - è la musica della Sfera.
