Chicago PD Detective Stella Carrigan and her partner are called to investigate a series of murders of women living in Vandalia, Illinois. It's a small town, unused to this level of violence. The killings are horrific, each one seemingly worse than the one before. The killer is leaving random items with each of the victims, but this last one has thrown Carrigan right back in her past. Twenty years earlier, Stella had been kidnapped from her foster family. It was this that set Stella on the path to becoming a law enforcement officer. What she finds when investigating is reminiscent of her own kidnapping. Is this all the handwriting of her tormentor/kidnapper from her childhood? Are the crime scene clues hidden messages that only she can decipher? The sleepy town is full of secrets, deep, dark secrets. And everyone who tries to uncover them finds themselves in great danger... Is Stella and her partner being targeted? Can she trust the very people she's helping with the case? This well-crafted plot with an intriguing story line filled with shadowed secrets. Riveting twists and turns lead to a surprising explosive conclusion. The characters are deftly drawn. There's also a potential romance .. will be nice to see how that turns out. Lots of action, this is a page turner not to be missed.
