William Shakespeare was born to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden in late April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. He wrote about 38 plays (the precise number is uncertain), many of which are regarded as the most exceptional works of drama ever produced, including Romeo and Juliet (1595), Henry V (1599), Hamlet (1601), Othello (1604), King Lear (1606) and Macbeth (1606), as well as a collection of 154 sonnets, which number among the most profound and influential love poetry in English. Amanda Root is an English stage, screen, and voice actor. In 2009 her performance in The Norman Conquests earned her a Tony nomination for Best Performance for a Featured Actress in a Play. She also played the voice of Sophie in The BFG, held the starring role in the 1995 BBC film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, and played Miranda in the British television comedy All About Me.
Samuel West’s long and distinguished career on stage and screen has earned him roles in Cambridge Spies, Waking the Dead, Notting Hill, and Iris, as well as a BAFTA nomination for his performance in Howards End. He has also narrated several audio books, including Sebastian Faulks’ Charlotte Gray, for which he won a Talkie Award, and Thomas Hardy’s The Woodlanders.
