In the forest, armed men from a new settlement ventured to investigate strange lights and found three fires burning, a child at their centre tethered to a stake. The boy appeared to be white, perhaps three or four years old, unable to speak. So begins Dirk Wildlight's life in the tiny Victorian settlement of Tilmore. Reluctantly he's taken in, only to be treated with suspicion, neglect and cruelty. Then, a strange turn in fortune leads him not only towards freedom, but to an understanding of the mystery of his earliest years.

David Metzenthen is a Melbourne-based author for young readers. He's written dozens of books for children and young adults, including One Runaway Rabbit, Johnny Hart's Heroes, Boys of Blood and Bone, Wildlight: A Journey, Augustin and the Hot Air Balloon and Jarvis. Metzenthen has received many awards for excellence, including the 2000 CBCA Book of the Year Award for Older Readers, a 2003 Victorian Premier's Literary Award and a 2003 Queensland Premier's Literary Award. His book One Minute's Silence won the Children's Fiction category in the 2015 Prime Minister's Literary Awards.

Michael Veitch is a multi-talented writer, performer and presenter. He has an academic background in history but made his name as part of the ABC’s cult hit The D-Generation, followed by Fast Forward, Full Frontal and more. For five years he was the face of ABC television’s national weekly arts program, Sunday Arts, followed by a three year stint on ABC Radio, broadcasting across Tasmania and Victoria.
