In this novel, Ray Smith and Japhy Rhyder serve as stand-ins for Kerouac and poet Gary Snyder, while the Alvah Goldbook character is fellow Beat Generation compatriot Allen Ginsberg. On this unique recording of The Dharma Bums, two literary giants join forces again as Ginsberg movingly evokes the exultant style of his beloved friend.

Jack Kerouac (1922-1969) was a poet, novelist, and a central figure of the Beat Generation, along with William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. Kerouac's works included The Subterraneans, The Town and the City, and On the Road. Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) was a writer, poet, and a prominent figure of the Beat Generation. Collections of his verse included Howl and Other Poems, Reality Sandwiches, and The Fall of America, which won the National Book Award. Ginsberg also recorded many of his works and narrated a novel by his Beat Generation friend, Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums.
