About this audiobook

From New York Times bestselling and Hugo Award-winning author T. Kingfisher comes Hemlock & Silver, a dark reimagining of “Snow White” steeped in poison, intrigue, and treason of the most magical kind

Healer Anja regularly drinks poison.

Not to die, but to save—seeking cures for those everyone else has given up on.

But a summons from the King interrupts her quiet, herb-obsessed life. His daughter, Snow, is dying, and he hopes Anja’s unorthodox methods can save her.

Aided by a taciturn guard, a narcissistic cat, and a passion for the scientific method, Anja rushes to treat Snow, but nothing seems to work. That is, until she finds a secret world, hidden inside a magic mirror. This dark realm may hold the key to what is making Snow sick.

Or it might be the thing that kills them all.

"Pickens adjusts her approach appropriately for several characters...[Anja's] enthusiasm and wonder are delightfully narrated, and so too is her horror as she learns the truth about the alternate realm and its creatures." — AudioFile

Throw all the stars at this book! HEMLOCK & SILVER is my new favorite by T. Kingfisher. I loved Anja, our main character. She’s in her thirties, comfortably single, and childless. She’s witty, smart, and (figuratively) tosses up a middle finger at women’s conventional roles. The story begins as a straightforward historical mystery, and I was so intrigued that I’d forgotten Kingfisher's habit of suddenly shoving us down a mind-bending rabbit hole. And oh how I loved that rabbit hole! I'm not saying anything more. I went into this book completely blind, which I recommend. No spoilers here. 🤐 Really, don’t even read the synopsis. Just jump in for some exceptional entertainment. I listened to the audiobook, and I’m throwing all the stars at Jennifer Pickens for her performance! Truly, perfection. I was so fully immersed that I’m not even sure what I was doing during the hours I listened. *Huge thank you to Macmillan Audio for the free audiobook download!*

If you’ve enjoyed other T. Kingfisher stories, you’ll probably enjoy this dark yet funny historical fantasy inspired by Snow White. If you haven’t read her yet but you like weird humorous stories, this is a great place to start. She has a knack for bringing quirky characters to life & placing them in bizarre situations. I loved Healer Anja, whose thoughts & dialog often caused me to laugh out loud. I also enjoyed the other characters, & how aspects of the fairytale became a very different story.
