Luke Benami thought his father Yossef was the great man the world said he was: professor, general, Israeli national hero. Luke also thought his brother Danni was the prodigal his family said he was: army deserter, political exile, criminal. Neil Gordon was born in South Africa in 1958, and has also lived in New York, Scotland, Paris, and Israel. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he was awarded two Hopwood Prizes for fiction, and earned his Ph.D. in French literature at Yale. He has also studied at the University of Jerusalem and the Sorbonne. Until recently on the staff at The New York Review of Books, he is currently managing editor of The Reader's Catalog and the literary editor of The Boston Review. He lives in New York.
