Philip Carey, a sensitive orphan born with a clubfoot, finds himself in desperate need of passion and inspiration. W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was an English playwright, novelist, and short story writer whose most notable works include Of Human Bondage, The Razor's Edge, and The Gentleman in the Parlour.
