About this audiobook

What if one moment changed the very way humans see each other?

In the small Mississippi town of Bends Creek, ordinary life shatters overnight. A strange phenomenon sweeps through the community, stripping residents of their ability to make snap judgments based on appearance. Prejudice, attraction, bias—gone. The result is both liberating and terrifying, as families, friendships, and long-held assumptions are tested in ways no one could have imagined.

When the CDC arrives to investigate, the mystery only deepens. No virus can be detected, no pattern explained. The nation’s attention turns to Bends Creek, where the afflicted struggle with questions of identity and truth. Meanwhile, a shadowy stranger arrives in town, carrying secrets that could explain—or destroy—everything.

Is this “affliction” the result of a government experiment gone wrong, a military bioweapon, or something far beyond human understanding?

Blending small-town drama with big-idea science fiction, The Affliction: Provenance is a chilling, thought-provoking thriller about perception, prejudice, and the hidden costs of tampering with human nature. Fans of Michael Crichton, Blake Crouch, and The X-Files will be captivated by this unsettling first chapter in a bold new sci-fi saga.

About the author

M.J. Petrin was born in Biddeford, Maine. For the first 10 years, he lived in Camp Ellis Beach, Maine, a small Lobster town where he felt safe and protected living in a quiet community.

When he moved to Miami, Florida, with his mother and brother, culture shock hit him hard. They lived in Miami and Miami Beach hotel rooms for the first 4 years in Florida. As a 10-year-old roaming the streets of downtown Miami, he experienced many things. His greatest lesson was seeing people at their lowest point in life committing unselfish acts to help others. He understood that it doesn’t matter how we look or believe; empathy for our fellow man is the most important gift we can bestow on each other during our short time on this planet.

He currently lives with his wife near Baltimore, Maryland, a city that provides him with constant inspiration.

Although his first novel series, The Affliction, is considered science fiction, the characters are exposed to the realities of everyday American life.  The characters strive to improve their world through empathy, hope, and tolerance. Something we all could use a little of.
