About this audiobook

Collision Orbit by Katherine MacLean - The mountain men who opened up the frontier in the west weren’t settlers, they were trappers, traders, fighters and gunmen — the men who didn’t fit back home. The kind of men who will be needed on the frontier of space...

Katherine MacLean (1925–2019) was an American science fiction writer known for her innovative and scientifically rigorous storytelling. She was one of the key figures in mid-20th-century science fiction, blending hard science with deep psychological and sociological insights.

She was born on January 22, 1925, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. She studied psychology and sociology at Barnard College and later pursued graduate studies in microbiology. Her strong scientific background deeply influenced her fiction, which often explored themes of scientific discovery, the future of human evolution, and the impact of technology on society.

MacLean’s first published story, “Defense Mechanism” (1949), appeared in Astounding Science Fiction and was well-received by editor John W. Campbell. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, she became known for her intelligent and thoughtful approach to science fiction, contributing to major pulp and digest magazines.

She won the Nebula Award for Best Novella for The Missing Man (1971).

In 2003, she was honored as a SFWA Author Emeritus, recognizing her contributions to the genre.

Katherine MacLean passed away on September 1, 2019, at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering and underrated voice in science fiction.
