This history of modern Iran is not a survey in the conventional sense but an ambitious exploration of the story of a nation. Abbas Amanat is William Graham Sumner Professor of History at Yale University and Director of the Yale Program in Iranian Studies at MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies.
