Bill, the "Nameless Detective," and his wife Kerry were in the Sierra foothills, just outside of Six Pines, falling in love with a cabin. It was all perfect, until Kerry went missing.
They'd seen Balfour at breakfast at the diner, and Kerry remembered his name—PR people are like that—which was unfortunate, because when she ran into him along the trail on that sunny afternoon and called him by name, he panicked. And that's when Bill's nightmare began. In a small town with limited resources, where a major case was keeping everyone busy, a private investigator demanding action wasn't very popular. They were doing all they could, Bill was told. But it wasn't enough.
With the help of his longtime associate Jake Runyon, Bill begins a search that uncovers just what price the citizens in a town without pity might have to pay. Bill and Jake follow the few leads they have and come face to face with the Hellbox.

Bill Pronzini is the award-winning author of ninety novels, including forty-six in his Nameless Detective series, two others series, four nonfiction books, and numerous short stories. He has won three Shamus Awards and the Grand Prix de Littérature Policière for the best crime novel published in France. He earned the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Private Eye Writers of American and the Bouchercon Lifetime Achievement Award. He was named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America, making him and his wife, Marcia Muller, the second pair of married mystery writers to be so honored, with Ross Macdonald and Margaret Millar being the first.
Nick Sullivan has narrated audiobooks for over twenty years and has recorded over four hundred titles. An Audie Award winner, he is also the recipient of numerous AudioFile Earphones Awards. He has worked extensively on Broadway and at many U.S. theaters. Nick's TV credits include The Good Wife, The Affair, Divorce, Younger, Bull, Madam Secretary, Boardwalk Empire, 30 Rock, Elementary, and all three Law and Order series.
