This work opens up the inner worlds of a soldier guarding a tomb, a youth who loses his cloak, a madman who lives among tombs, a boy who shares his food, and a woman battles seven demons. What surprises us is not only how much can be imagined, but how much courage and a fierce love are present in these stories.

In this work, the author, who has degrees in philosophy and psychology, draws upon his research in biblical studies and the history of the early Roman empire. He has also made use of his own symbolic experiences and his work with dreams, in which he attempts to reveal archetypes operative in humans. Often, he has found that heroism arises when historical forces encounter characters with an archetypal dimension.
