In the middle of the First World War, and sweltering in the heat of a nominally neutral country in South-eastern Europe, disillusioned Naval Intelligence officer Roger Waterlow seeks to make sense of scraps of information gathered by his agents, in the face of indifference or outright hostility from most of his colleagues at the British Legation. But when word reaches him that a German officer visiting from Berlin for talks with the countryâs pro-German king is to be picked up by submarine, violating the countryâs âneutralityâ, he sees the chance to finally make a real difference in the war...

Sir Edward Montague Compton Mackenzie (1883â1972) was a British author of fiction, biography, and history. Born in England into a theatrical family, Mackenzie was ardently interested in his Scottish heritage, and was one of the founders of the National Party of Scotland, which later became part of the modern Scottish National Party. His most famous fictional works are Whisky Galore, which was adapted into a highly successful British comedy film made by Ealing Studios; and Monarch of the Glen, which inspired a popular and long-running BBC television series.
