Constructionist Therapy: Reconstructing Reality through Language

Language is not merely a tool we use to describe our world—it is the very foundation upon which we construct our understanding of reality itself. Every word we speak, every narrative we tell ourselves, every conversation we engage in actively shapes the landscape of our experience. This fundamental principle lies at the heart of constructionist therapy, a revolutionary approach that recognizes the profound power of language to both create and transform the realities we inhabit.

When we consider the traditional view of therapy, we often imagine a process of uncovering hidden truths, excavating buried traumas, or fixing broken psychological mechanisms. The therapist becomes an archaeologist of the mind, carefully brushing away layers of defense and denial to reveal the authentic self beneath. But what if this entire metaphor is fundamentally flawed? What if there is no buried treasure of truth waiting to be discovered, no fixed essence of self to be uncovered? What if, instead, we are constantly in the process of creating ourselves through the stories we tell and the language we use?

In the constructionist view, we are not passive recipients of an objective reality that exists independently of our perception.
