Amongst all the figures in the history of Western art forms, Beethoven is one of the most radical and influential. Romain Rolland (1866–1944) was a French dramatist, novelist, essayist, and art historian who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915. He wrote extensively on music and musicians.
