About this audiobook

The Salvation Army has come prancing and singing from the slums of London to the poorest quarters of Oxford, but along with its red-hot gospel preaching and music hall songs it brings a prohibition message which sparks immediate opposition and violence. An Army soldier – an ex-drunk – is brutally killed and a note suggests that the Salvation Army’s shadowy enemy, the Skeleton Army, is responsible. With the police unwilling to come between the two forces, Non Vaughan, aspiring journalist and great hope of the Oxford women’s college movement, and Basil Rice, Jesus College fellow and union-sanctioned guardian of the dead man’s family, are compelled to investigate. But as the threats from both sides escalate, resulting in a second death, Non and Basil realise that they must stop the fighting before it results in an outright war. For with the University’s annual commemoration week fast approaching, the entire city could be engulfed in fire and blood ...

About the author

A CWA Historical Dagger shortlisted author, Alis Hawkins grew up on a dairy farm in Cardiganshire. Her inner introvert thought it would be a good idea to become a shepherd and, frankly, if she had she might have been published sooner. As it was, three years reading English at Oxford revealed an extrovert streak and a social conscience which sent her off to train as a Speech and Language Therapist. She has spent the subsequent three decades variously working in a burger restaurant, bringing up two sons, working with homeless people and helping families to understand their autistic children. And writing. Always. Nonfiction (autism related), plays (commissioned for production in heritage locations) and, of course, novels. Initially fascinated by the medieval period, she began her crime and mystery career at Pan Macmillan with a historical novel set during the fourteenth century then fast-forwarded to West Wales in the nineteenth century to fulfil a long-held desire to write a book based on Wales’s best kept historical secret: the Rebecca Riots. The resulting historical crime series features blind investigator Harry Probert-Lloyd and his chippy assistant, John Davies. As a side-effect of setting her series in Ceredigion, instead of making research trips to sunny climes like more foresighted writers, she drives up the M4 to see her family.

Ffion Aynsley is a London-based voice artist, singer-songwriter and musician from West Wales. Fluent in Welsh and Spanish, with a Masters from UCL, Ffion has performed with numerous theatre and music ensembles in the UK and Spain. She has worked in healthcare and educational settings using music as a therapeutic tool to facilitate expression and communication. Ffion is a skilled storyteller and narrator with a rich and emotive voice. Recent audiobook credits include Neon Roses by Rachel Dawson and Barbara Erskine’s Daughters of Fire.

Iestyn Arwel is a Welsh actor based in London. His credits include Death Valley for BBC studios, The War Between the Land and the Sea for BBC and Disney, Burn, Burn, Burn on Netflix, and S4C’s 35 Awr and Merched Parchus. He has recorded audiobooks for Michael Morpurgo and David Baddiel, amongst others. The Oxford Mysteries is the second series of audiobooks he has narrated for Alis Hawkins.
