Much of the richness of our language and moral education is owed to a Greek slave who was executed over two thousand years ago. Aesop is thought to have lived from 620 to 560 B.C. Legend depicts him as a slave with a gift for talking his way out of trouble or punishment, often reciting his fables to illustrate an injustice or human folly. Mentioned by other classical writers such as Herodotus and Aristotle, he is believed to have died after being thrown off a cliff in punishment for stealing a precious goblet.
Jack Zipes is the author of The Irresistible Fairy Tale, translator of The Original Bambi and The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, and editor of The Sorcerer's Apprentice. He is professor emeritus of German and comparative literature at the University of Minnesota.
